Inspired by the exoskeleton of a sea urchin (Echinoidea), thumbnail sketches combine elements of the urchin and a soap pump, exploring where these forms best connect texturally and functionally. The drawn forms are modeled after segments of the urchin’s decagonal structure.
Low-fidelity model-making allows for experimentation with materials and function; crocheted twine and plaster exude a beachy aesthetic while remaining texturally pleasing. This phase identified the hanging ledge feature between the dispenser and brush, made of aluminum slap bands, that allows for a brush-and-wand configuration.
The final sketch model is CAD-rendered and 3D-printed, serving as a base for wax-melt detailing to express the urchin’s texture. Silicone mold-making of the detailed bottle creates a resin, plaster, or liquid plastic copy of the soap bottle.
Loading the CAD design into KeyShot, the bottle’s texture, material, and color can be refined and developed into the final product, ready for advertising and mass production (mock-website brand spread).
